| Functions /Services The functions of DGAL are undertaken by five sections as follows;
Forensic Division (Misnomer0-comprises two sections;
Toxicology Laboratory
It is mainly concerned with toxicological analysis in human, animals and environment samples as well as physical and chemical analysis of exhibits in arson, motor vehicle collisions, acid attacks and other cases of forensic nature
DNA Laboratory
This laboratory deals with general blood grouping as well as DNA fingerprinting to determine identity of a person in case of rape, defilement, murder,assault,burglary,paternity and any other cases where identification of persons, dead or alive is required
Foods and drugs Section
This section carries out both forensic and general analysis on foods and drugs, both clinical and controlled, to determine suitability for human and animal consumption
Scientific Aids laboratory comprises Ballistic and Questioned Documents Laboratories
Ballistics
This section is purely forensic and is responsible for examining exhibits that are recovered in cases involving firearms, shooting or otherwise and explosives. Use of firearms in criminal offences is frequent and features prominently in most of the heinous crimes like murders, robberies, assassinations and mob violence as well as in Police encounters and firings
This section is also responsible for examinations of suspected tool marks
Questioned Documents
The section is responsible for examining documents to ascertain its authenticity, authorship, source, traces of erasures of /on documents questioned in courts of law. The documents may be land titles, letters wills, writings on walls such as graffi, security documents, etc
Pesticide Residue Laboratory
This section analyses pesticide residues in foods and environmental samples for both local consumption and exports. This section would be a major source of Non Tax Revenue in analysis of fish, flowers, vegetables and fruits for export
Water and Environment Research Laboratory
This section analyses water for various purpose and as environment inspectors monitor municipal and industrial effluents for compliance with sets standards. They also examine and analyze environmental samples for contaminants/pollutants
